London-US-Italy: The Path of Luke Read, Now Student-Athlete at SMI
Luke Read is originally from London, England but for the last 4 years he lived in America playing for the NCAA Division 1 soccer program of Norther Illinois University Huskies. He is a huge West Ham United fan and his passion about soccer and desire to travel made the decision to attend Soccer Management Institute very easy.
“I chose to attend SMI for a number of reasons, firstly I believe it is a great opportunity to progress as a footballer playing in the Italian leagues. Secondly, the courses that SMI offers interest me a lot and will give me opportunities to learn more about the game and set me up well for any future careers within the sport. Thirdly, I love to travel and the option to go to SMI stood out as it is located in a beautiful city. I am thinking about travelling around Italy while I am at SMI. When I am not studying, and on physical rests from soccer, I will explore parts of the country as it is such a good opportunity to see things I have never seen before!“
English and then American soccer shaped the player Luke is now but he firmly believes that his characteristics fits well in the Italian competition. He is aware that it will take a little bit of time to fully adapt to the new style of the game but he is confident on his skills. “I believe the Italian soccer leagues will suit me well as I am a calm and composed player and I think the tactical aspect of the game is one of my main strengths. In England, when we think of Italian soccer, we think of very smart, technical, and tactical players like Pirlo, Nesta, and Maldini. I will look to adapt my characteristics to the Italian soccer league as quickly and best as I can.”Â
Moving to Italy is a big step but it definitely represents a huge opportunity in terms of professional career. After 4 years in the US, Luke is used to being far away from his family and friends and now he shorten the distance from England. A two hours flight do not scare him or his people at home whom are already organizing their trip to Florence. “When I told people I would be moving to Italy to play and study, they all seemed very excited and I’ve had to answer tonnes of questions about it. Lots of my friends and family have said they will visit me in Italy once I get settled! Having friends and family from England, it will be a lot easier and cheaper for them to visit me than it was when I lived in America.”
“Now it is time to start and I cannot wait!”
